Career Story: 

Completed residency in 1976.77 - 80: Did full time ER work and joined ACEP. In spare time started a private solo FM practice.80s. Got tired of working nights in the ER. Private practice grew. Recruited 3 additional docs and one FNP. Built and owned buildings to accommodate same. Did a lot of OB"_about 1000 deliveries. Practice grew some more"_had 20,000 patient charts in a town of 70,000.90s. Did not like the economic and business outlook for independent small Family Medicine groups. Began to make non-medical investments which luckily were successful.97 99. Took a sabbatical, sold the house, moved onto our boat and cruised from Alaska to Mexico. A great experience.2000 2010. Moved off the boat and built another house. Returned to flying professionally part time. Returned to medicine part time. Went to work for different cruise and expedition lines as on board medical officer or ship's physician, traveling throughout most of the world. Still doing same. Just returned from the North Pole working as medical officer on a Russian icebreaker.Some other activities.Stayed in the USPHS as a Reservist and became a National Emergency Medical Responder . Was one of the first group of PHS docs into New Orleans after Katrina. Spent a month working with the Border Patrol in California. Last year spent a month on a NOAA research vessel at sea between Hawaii and Midway studying lobsters and looking for poachers.Got interested in local government works and ran for public office. Was elected as Port Commissioner for the local county. Re-elected in 2008.Bottom line: There are few specialties other than Family Medicine that would have allowed me to have all this fun and variation in my professional life. I have no regrets.
