Pain and Your Brain: How Do Mind-Body Techniques Affect the Central Mechanisms of Pain?

Wed, 10/14/2020 - 6:00pm

Join us as UArizona's Dr. Ann Marie Chiasson discusses the impact of pain on the brain. She will provide an overview of pain transmission, pain circuitry, and changes in the structure and functioning of the brain. She will highlight some of the physical changes that can be seen via imaging of the brain such as MRI for those experiencing chronic pain. She will outline the overlap and connection between chronic pain and multiple conditions, including: post traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD), fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, migraine, and restless leg syndrome, among others. In addition, the relationship between chronic pain and mental health will be addressed as Dr. Chiasson shares meaningful research highlighting this critical link.

From her perspective as a board-certified integrative medicine physician, she will also give a broad overview of mind-body medicine, which focuses on "the interactions among the brain, mind, body, and behavior and the ways in which emotional, mental, social, and behavioral factors directly affect health." Examples of mind-body practices include hypnosis, guided imagery, mindfulness, biofeedback, and meditation. She will cover the evidence for these mind-body interventions as they relate to chronic pain and provide the audience with useful resources.
