ArtWorks is a community outreach program sponsored by the University of Arizona since 1989. It provides adults with disabilities with an opportunity to develop their artistic potential while at the same time offering training, research opportunities, and field experiences to students and professionals interested in learning about the multiple uses of the visual arts for people with disabilities.
University students from the Colleges of Fine Arts, Medicine and Education have been involved in this unique interdiscliplinary learning experience. Students from these disciplines are able to participate in the ArtWorks programs as volunteers, interns, and/or resident-artists. The presence of ArtWorks on the University campus has been an opportunity for all participants to experience a feeling of belonging and acceptance while challenging each other to reach their personal potential.
ArtWorks daily program includes art production, social development, cultural activities, and personal care and grooming. Since its establishment, the mission of ArtWorks has been to promote creative expression and wellness through the arts. This focus continues through ongoing research related to quality of life issues including physical and emotional wellness.
