2+2 Rotation Structure

Our program is one of only 25 family medicine residency programs nationwide that has been granted a waiver to allow us to explore innovative residency scheduling structures.

In July 2018, we implemented a "2+2” rotation structure for our interns. This change focuses our interns’ clinical experience on foundational inpatient experiences (Inpatient Family Medicine, Inpatient Pediatrics, Inpatient Obstetrics) with equal focus on the outpatient family medicine practice. Interns alternate between 2 weeks of inpatient work and 2 weeks of outpatient work in the family medicine center, managing their continuity panel.

In July 2019, we expanded the “2+2” structure to portions of the R2 and R3 years to allow for 2-week immersive Inpatient Family Medicine rotations coupled with 2 weeks in the family medicine center.

These changes have resulted in regular resident presence in the family medicine center to facilitate patients’ access to care, close working relationships within our clinic teams, and improved preparation for residency graduates to lead interdisciplinary teams.
