Cultural Competence in the Context of Type II Diabetes, Phase 1 [NIDDK]

Randa Kutob, MD, MPH
This Phase I study developed a prototype online CME program to teach physicians and other healthcare providers the general concepts of cross-cultural health care, how to apply these concepts to a specific population (Mexican Americans), and how to interact effectively in the cross-cultural setting in the context of chronic illness (type II diabetes mellitus.). As part of this project we developed and tested at tool to measure physician’s self-reported cultural competence. We tested the effectiveness on the newly developed course in a national randomized sample of family medicine residents.
