Ambulatory Training Settings:

The UAPMR will utilize six ambulatory care training settings; the MCDPH TB and STD  clinics, the homeless clinic, the PIMC diabetes and substance abuse clinics, and the Piper Center cancer prevention clinic.

The MCDPH TB clinic provides TB treatment services to 60% of the approximately 200 patients diagnosed with active TB each year in Maricopa County. All patients are placed on directly observed therapy. The TB clinic also provides TB skin test screening and evaluation of patients with suspected latent and active TB. Treatment of latent TB is provided at the clinic for those who do not have health insurance. Of active TB patients, 60% are Hispanic, 8 % African-American and 8 % Asian. Native Americans are usually cared for by the Indian Health Service. The clinic provides services for a mean of 700 patients each month.

The STD clinic is the only public STD clinic in the county and is the largest in the southwest. It provides over 20,000 patient visits each year for approximately 12,000 patients. Half of the patients are Hispanic, and 15 % are African-American, compared to a county population that consists of 3.7 % African Americans.  The clinic provides diagnostic and treatment services for all the major STDs and includes HIV testing as part of the routine battery of tests.

The homeless clinic is located near downtown Phoenix. It provides an integrated system of health care services to homeless persons living in Maricopa County. Services are provided through an inter-disciplinary approach which combines aggressive street outreach, integrated primary care, mental health services, substance abuse services, case management and nutrition services.

The Phoenix Indian Medical Center is an Indian Health Service Facility that provides medical care to over 70,000 American Indians in the Phoenix service area. Arizona Indian communities have some of the highest rates of diabetes documented anywhere in the world. The UAPMR residents will rotate through two outpatient clinics at PIMC; the diabetes clinic and the substance abuse clinic.

The Piper Center cancer prevention clinic is located at the COM Cancer Center in North Scottsdale. It provides primary and secondary cancer prevention services to a predominantly insured population.
