Application Process

The application process:
The application process is managed by Ms. Judy Hall. To get started, contact her at 520-626-4188 or email jlhall@email.arizona.edu.
1. The T32 Director, Dr. Iris Bell will:
- a. Conduct an informal phone discussion with the applicant.
- b. Provide an overview of the program.
- c. Assist potential applicants by identifying a potential core DFCM WSR faculty member as a primary mentor. DFCM faculty research interests are described elsewhere on this website.
2. Applicant is required to contact the potential mentor and provide information on his/her background and interests.
3. A determination is made as to the successful interaction and future collaborative potential of the applicant and the mentor.
4. With the potential mentor’s approval, predoctoral and postdoctoral applicants begin the application process via Ms. Hall (see above).
5. Application material requirements:
- Letter of intent covering the following points (3 page maximum, 1 inch margins, Ariel/Helvetica font 11 or 12 pt):**
- Summary of educational background as relevant to career goals in whole systems of CAM research: applicants are evaluated on the strength of their predoctoral and doctoral program coursework, dissertation, publishing record.
- Recent professional experience in CAM: specifically, physicians and other health professionals must demonstrate interest in and capability for clinical research and show commitment to continuing research education beyond the two- to three-year ACAMRTP fellowship, such as masters or doctoral degrees in relevant fields
- Stated research interests: applicants are expected to clearly define a) their area of research interest within whole systems of CAM; and b) their proposed activities within the broad area of their proposed DFCM mentor’s research program, prior to acceptance.
- Curriculum vitae with sample publications or representative unpublished manuscripts, if available.
- Three (3) letters of reference.
- A confidential letter from the identified DFCM core T32 mentor giving an evaluation of the trainee’s materials and stating willingness to supervise the trainee, including regular weekly meetings, provision of a trainee apprenticeship in a mentor-led project, and development of a new trainee project.
The letters of reference may be converted into pdf format and, emailed directly from that person to the Director c/o jlhall@email.arizona.edu, faxed to 520-626-6134, or sent by courier service (e.g., UPS, FEDEX) or snail mail, if preferred, to the Director c/o Judy Hall at the 1450 N Cherry Avenue, Room 206, PO Box 245052, Tucson, AZ 85724.
6. Review process for acceptance:
- Application package is reviewed by a quorum of the ACAMRTP Executive Committee chaired by the Executive Committee Chair.
- After review and evaluation of the application package, the highest ranked candidates will be interviewed by the proposed senior mentor, the T32 Director, and one other member of the executive committee.
- A personal interview is strongly recommended.
- Prospective applicants will have the opportunity to interview with a current trainee in the relevant pre- or postdoctoral pathway, as available.
- Results of the review and interview process will be reported to the full Executive Committee for final approval of admissions.
**Applicant can receive general guidance from the proposed faculty mentor, but the applicant must prepare and write the application statement of goals and interests by him- or herself.
** It is the applicant’s responsibility to arrange for adding additional mentoring committee members from any University of Arizona Departments, including but not limited to the Department of Family and Community Medicine, as appropriate to the research area of interest and to prepare the training program application using as a general guideline the PHS forms and instructions for NRSA applications.(need links)
