Training Expectations
Trainees will be expected to make satisfactory progress as evidenced by:
- completing the required curriculum components, including apprenticing in the core mentor's funded research; developing and implementing his/her own trainee project within the practicum (postdocs) or within their predoctoral mentor's lab (predocs); completion of CAM research coursework (including the Bioethics course) on both conceptual/methodological and practical topics;
- making at least one seminar and one journal club presentation per year within the T32 and DFCM as well as giving at least one annual professional presentation at a national research conference;
- submitting at least one paper for peer reviewed publication per year of the fellowship;
- preparing (and preferably submitting) an NIH grant for an F31 or F32 or K award, and an R award as appropriate to trainee's circumstances and interests during the fellowship period;
- as indicated for their individual professional development, clinical degree trainees (MD, DO, ND, OMD, PharmD, PsyD, DOM, etc.) without additional prior research coursework preparation may be encouraged to apply for admission immediately after the T32 fellowship to a research-based degree or certificate program as follows:
- Certificate in Clinical Research - COPH 2-yr University of Arizona Clinical Research Curriculum Training
- MPH - Biostatistics, Environmental and Occupational Health, Epidemiology, Family and Child Health, Health Education and Behavioral Sciences, and Public Health Policy and Management
- PhD - Anthropology, Nursing, Psychology, including Health Psychology or Program Evaluation and Methodology, Epidemiology, Nutritional Sciences, Pharmacology/Toxicology, Pharmaceutical Economics, Policy & Outcomes Research, or other relevant academic degree programs
Note: We found that requiring a full degree- or certificate-oriented coursework plan in addition to the T32 training requirements made it extremely difficult for current T32 trainees to make satisfactory progress in two years on their own practical research experience and skill development. Therefore, we will be recruiting and screening for T32 fellows who are ready to undertake the T32 curriculum and requirements but who may choose to pursue further degrees as their career development continues.
