Barry Weiss, MD
Barry D Weiss is a tenured professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. A long time member of the faculty, he is also a former chairman of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
Dr. Weiss is the editor of Family Medicine, national journal of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. He is also the author of more than 130 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals, and series editor of McGraw-Hill’s 20 Common Problems textbooks, which includes Dr. Weiss's texts on 20 Common Problems in Primary Care and 20 Common Surgical Problems in Primary Care.
Dr. Weiss serves as medical editor of FP Essentials, the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Home Study Monograph Program. Home Study is AAFP’s largest continuing medical education program.
Dr Weiss has served as consultant to and on national committees for the National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute, the Institute of Medicine, the Joint Commission, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Physicians, and the American Medical Association.
Dr. Weiss's main teaching roles in the department are his work as attending physician on the family practice inpatient and maternal-child health service, and scholarly projects director for the Faculty Development Fellowship Program.
Dr. Weiss's research interests have centered on patient-physician communication, with an emphasis on the effects of limited health literacy on patient outcomes. His work in this area has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association,the New England Journal of Medicine, and a variety of other books and medical journals.
Dr. Weiss and his wife, Joyce, are avid tandem bicyclists, hikers, and backpackers. They have enjoyed these activities throughout Arizona, Alaska, and on multiple continents.
