Family & Community Medicine Third-Year Clerkship
Welcome to your third year and to the Family and Community Medicine Clerkship. While you will receive a more complete introduction to the goals and methods of the FCM Clerkship as you begin your FCM rotation, choosing a clinical site may be an important decision for you since 85% of your Clerkship will be spent at that clinical site. On this page we give you some perspective on the choice of your clerkship site.
Family Medicine: The Clerkship introduces the closely related fields of Family and Community Medicine. Within Family Medicine, you will learn: a) competence in diagnosis and treatment of diseases presenting in ambulatory care; b) the integration of clinical preventive medicine into the work-up of the ambulatory patient. From over a decade of documented experience in this clerkship, we can assure you that the medical problems you will see and manage will be quite uniform regardless of which of our many sites you choose. Thus, the importance of your choice may lie in the Community Medicine goal areas of this Clerkship.
Community Medicine: Family physicians work in a wide variety of community settings. These are reflected in your Clerkship site choices. Your sites have a wide spectrum of patient populations, practice management arrangements and technical and financial resources. You should thus choose out of your own interest, knowing that at the weekly meetings of your Clerkship group (either in Tucson, Phoenix or Flagstaff), you will be able to share experiences from your site with your fellow students.
We look forward to having you in the Clerkship.
Housing: See individual site listings for housing information. Please note that housing will not be provided for urban Tucson and Phoenix sites.
Mileage: The Department of Family and Community Medicine does not have the funds to reimburse students for their mileage expenses. Students are required, however, to attend a didactic session once a week in either Tucson, Phoenix or Flagstaff, based on the location of their site. Please consider this when making your site decision.
