Family Medicine Residency Curricular Award in Spirituality and Medicine [George Washington University Institute for Spirituality and Health from Templeton Fdn.]

Colleen Cagno, MD

We propose a new curriculum in Spirituality and Medicine for Family Medicine residents in training in the Department of Family and community Medicine at the University of Arizona, College of Medicine.  This curriculum will be an integral part of the Family Medicine Residency training spanning three years of residency experience.  We propose that the elements will build on each other over the three year span and will leave resident physicians with a breadth and depth of understanding of the role of spirituality in illness, healing and health and in their own practices of care giving.  It will further contain elements of cultural awareness, culturally sensitive understanding throughout the life cycle, and end of life care.  Family Medicine residents will model awareness and practice of spiritual, cultural and end of life issues, along with self awareness skills of their personal motivation to be healers in their medical student teaching.
