Our residency program, founded in 1972, continues to thrive in the beautiful Southern Arizona community of Tucson. Voted as one of the healthiest places to live in the United States, Tucson truly boasts the best of both worlds... the progress and innovation of a metropolitan community and the friendly, caring atmosphere of a small town. The mission of our residency program is to prepare full-spectrum physicians to provide excellent family-centered, community-responsive care with an emphasis on diverse and underserved populations. Some unique aspects of our program include: a large and diverse faculty experienced in teaching, clinical medicine and clinical research; a modern family medicine center with full EHR; and frontline adult inpatient care on a teaching service at a small hospital located in south Tucson. We are proud of our long tradition of active involvement in both the Tucson and the international communities and we offer numerous opportunities to become involved in community outreach and refugee programs.
To accomplish our mission, we:
- have family medicine faculty take the principal role in teaching clinical and academic skills;
- encourage the development of lifelong skills needed to balance professional and personal roles;
- foster the realization of one's unique identity as a family physician;
- support resident involvement in various community projects; and
- create an enjoyable, respectful and supportive environment.
Three miles from the University of Arizona campus, our residency is an integral part of a dynamic university department and our focus is on innovation in resident education, featuring the Integrative Medicine in Residency (IMR) curriculum -- 300 additional hours our graduates receive to more fully prepare them for the changing face of primary care. Our faculty model and actively practice the full spectrum of clinical medicine alongside our residents in a collegial and supportive learning environment. Our residents rotate at all three major Tucson medical centers, with an optional month of obstetrics in Phoenix.
